5.3 magnitude earthquake rocks remote West Texas

A swarm of earthquakes, including a magnitude 5.3 tremor, rattled West Texas near the border with New Mexico late Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The strong quake hit about 35 miles south of Whites City, New Mexico, nearly 4 miles beneath the surface at 7:47 p.m.

    At least 46 smaller quakes were recorded in the area since early April.

    The 5.3 tremor was the strongest of three that rocked the area Saturday night, including magnitude 3.4 and 2.9 earthquakes.
