At least three hunters died of heart attacks within 48 hours amid the current 16-day deer hunting season, including two men who died trying to haul away the animals.
The hunters, three men aged 57, 65, and 83, died in Tuscola and Arenac counties were participating in the traditional firearm deer season which started Nov. 15.
“I’ve never seen three people die in 48 hours from heart attacks while deer hunting before,” the medical examiner, Dr. William Morrone, said.
Morrone said that hunters need to prepare themselves for the deer season and suggested the Department of Natural Resources require proof of a physical for participants.
“Deer season come and bam: I have a rifle, I have a backpack, and I’m trudging through the woods.”
“Deer hunting is a big deal in this state, but it’s also taxing the body.”
