A Texas couple has admitted to the brutal slaying of a man who had allowed them to live with him in his Garland condominium, police said.
Haley Barber and Leo Moore, 20, drugged 53-year-old Johnny Mac Ross Jr.’s drink and waited until he fell asleep to stab him in the neck early November.
The suspects left the residence for about 10 hours to find out that Ross was still alive. Prosecutors said Barber asked Moore to “finish off” Ross so she wouldn’t have to see him suffering as they stole his property.
Ross’ body was found wrapped in garbage bags and a rug on Nov. 11 when Barber confessed to a friend about the murder.
The friend accompanied Barber to Ross’ residence to buy his stolen car and noticed a foul smell. That’s when Barber showed the friend Ross’ decomposing body.
Police arrested the couple after tracking Ross’ stolen 2001 Mercedes to Miller Road near LBJ Freeway.
“Haley Barber and Leo Moore fled and led them in a brief vehicle pursuit before stopping and fleeing on foot,” authorities said.
The couple was ultimately arrested on several charges including capital murder by terror, threat or other felony, and evading arrest. Moore faces an additional charge of property theft.
