A 5-year-old boy was pulled from a retention pond and pronounced dead after he drowned while on vacation in South Carolina.
Horry County authorities responded to Surfside Beach at the 200 block of Presidential Drive at around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
The boy who was visiting the area from Atlanta was taken to a hospital, where he died later that night.

Neighbors blamed the lack of a fence to protect the children from drowning in area ponds.
“It’s a big dip and little children are just going to slip and fall in the water and whatever,” one said.
“It’s sad but not overly surprising, which is the worst part of all that something would happen like that to a small child.”
