Kansas deputy dies after shooting suspect dead while responding to report of illegal fireworks

A Kansas sheriff’s deputy is dead after he fatally shot a suspect during an exchange of gunfire while responding to reports of illegal fireworks.

Phillips County Sheriff’s Deputy Brandon Gaede, 30, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital after gunning down 27-year-old Kolton Griffith during the Friday evening incident.

  • Gaede was responding to reports of fireworks being detonated at a home when he encountered Griffith.

    As Gaede attempted to handcuff Griffith, the suspect pulled out a handgun and shot him.

    The deputy fired back, hitting Griffith several times. The suspect died at the scene.
