Boy, 5, dies in hot car where he was left for nine hours: ‘He was a wonderful child’

A 5-year-old boy died Thursday after he was left in a hot car for an extended amount of time, authorities in Mansfield said.

First responders rushed to a parking lot on Marion Avenue around 3:35 p.m. and found a woman holding her unresponsive child at the scene.

About nine hours earlier, the mother arrived at work and went inside, leaving the 5-year-old boy in the backseat as temperatures reached a high of 91 degrees.

The child was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

  • “My heart is just broken,” said Olivia Kidd, a day care teacher said remembering how he loved snack time.

    “He told me he loved me every day. I will miss seeing him at school next year, going to all of his events, seeing him at T-ball.”

    “I don’t know how I could forget him. I will remember him in everything, honestly.”

    “He was a wonderful child. He really was,” caregiver Jessica Phillips said.
