A mountain lion is being hunted in Northern California after a deadly attack on two siblings Saturday afternoon.
The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to the attack at around 1:30 p.m. when an 18-year-old called to report that he and his 21-year-old brother were attacked by a mountain lion while hunting for shed antlers.
Deputies rushed to the remote section of the county to find the animal still crouched near the deceased victim. The surviving victim suffered “traumatic injuries” to his face.
The deputies fired their weapons scaring off the mountain lion. They then examined the older brother and declared him dead at the scene.
The search for the mountain lion continues with the assistance of California’s Department of Fish and Wildlife wardens.
Mountain lions’ attacks on humans remain rare with the last deadly encounter dating back to 2004 in Orange County, records show.
