A rollover crash claimed the lives of two service members deployed to the U.S. southern border and seriously hurt a third near Santa Teresa, New Mexico, military officials.
The deadly crash unfolded around 8:50 a.m. Tuesday, just over the state line with Texas, west of the Fort Bliss Army installation.
The deaths are the first reported among troops sent to the U.S.-Mexico border in support of the President’s executive order to tighten security in the area.
Three defense officials spoke on the condition of anonymity, revealing that the three victims were U.S. Marines from Camp Pendleton in California.
The sources also said the crash occurred in a civilian vehicle and did not involve the Stryker vehicles performing patrols along the border.
