A Missouri man has been arrested on murder charges more than three years after the mother of his child was found slain in a gruesome scene.

Karl Mayberry, 34, was on Wednesday charged with one count of first-degree murder in connection with the December 2021 killing of 31-year-old Alvatyne Thomas.

Officers responded to the victim’s home on Dec. 27, 2021, for a welfare check and discovered her body on a chair with a “plastic bag taped around her head.”

“She had been shot in the back and had extreme swelling to her forehead, a severed ear, and apparent defensive wounds on her hands,” an affidavit said.

Thomas’ relatives told detectives she had been in an abusive relationship with Mayberry, who was the last person she texted.

Mayberry claimed he was at work at the time of the murder, but “multiple co-workers” told detectives he “had disappeared again for hours during the timeframe in question.”

“Officers also learned that, when the Defendant appeared again, he was in different clothes and appeared emotionally distraught.”

Mayberry made incriminating Google searches after Thomas’ death, including texts revealing details of the murder “prior to police releasing this accurate information to anyone.”
