Alabama father dies awaiting trial for death of special needs son found decomposing in freezer

An Alabama father awaiting trial for the death of his special needs son has died on July 7.

A cause of death for Michael Halstead, 44, was not released but authorities said he was out on bond when he died.

Halstead and his 44-year-old wife Karen Halstead were charged with reckless manslaughter and abuse of a corpse in the death of Logan Halstead, 19.

    Last year, Halstead said in court that he did not recall how his son died or how his body ended up in the freezer since her had been experiencing a manic episode.

    Prosecutors claimed the Halsteads “recklessly and consciously disregarded the treatment of Logan which resulted in his death.”

    Karen Halstead’s trial will start in October.
