A 5-year-old Missouri girl is clinging to life after a dog wandered into her family’s backyard and brutally mauled her earlier this month.

The incident occurred at around 10 a.m. Tuesday when “an unrestrained dog entered the fenced-in backyard of the residence where the child and adult were.”

The victim, identified as Aletha, suffered “severe lacerations” from the attack and was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance.

The girl had been in a medically induced coma “and is fighting for her life in intensive care.”

“Because of the loss of blood and oxygen, doctors fear Aletha may have suffered permanent brain damage.”

Independence Police Det. Jack Taylor said that the investigation is still ongoing and may lead to criminal charges.
