Three people were killed and four others injured when a bridge set for demolition collapsed in Mississippi Wednesday afternoon.
The bridge located on State Route 149 over Strong River in Simpson County had been closed to traffic since Sept. 18 and was under the process of demolition at the time of the premature collapse.
“Sadly, there were fatalities as a result of the accident, and we extend our deepest condolences to the families who have lost loved ones,” the Mississippi Department of Transportation said.
Gov. Tate Reeves confirmed that three people were killed in the “worksite accident.”
“We have confirmed multiple injuries and at least three fatalities from the accident,” he said.
“As the situation develops, authorities will provide more information while respecting the privacy of the bereaved.”
“Please keep the families and coworkers of everyone involved in your prayers.”
Sheriff Paul Mullins said that four people were critically wounded. All victims were employees at T.L. Wallace Construction, the contractor for the bridge replacement project.
County Coroner Terry Tutor revealed that the seven men were using heavy machinery on the bridge before it gave away and plunged nearly 40 feet.
