8 killed in fiery, head-on crash in rural Kansas

Eight people were killed late Sunday in a fiery, head-on collision involving two vehicles in rural eastern Kansas, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5:45 p.m. Sunday near Virginia Road on U.S. 169 near Greeley, Missouri, the Kansas Highway Patrol said.

A GMC Yukon tried to pass a vehicle on the southbound lane when it collided head-on with a northbound Subaru Legacy. Both vehicles burst into flames from the impact.

  • Officials later identified the Yukon’s occupants as members of a Tulsa youth basketball team and family members.

    The Yukon’s driver, Jaimon Gilstrap, 33, and passengers: Kyron Gilstrap, 14, Donald Laster, 14, and 41-year-old Wayne Walls died at the scene.

    A 15-year-old occupant survived and was taken to a hospital.

    The Subaru was occupied by four people identified as Alexander Ernst, 37, of Iowa; John Elliott, 76; Norleen Elliott, 69; and Madalyn Elliott, 33, of Missouri. All four died in the crash.
