Authorities in Jal, New Mexico are investigating the shocking discovery of at least 10 human skulls and other human remains at a local residence.
On Nov. 5, the Lea County Sheriff’s Office was notified of an “unsettling encounter” that led to the macabre scene.
Someone called 911 to report that he gave a man with two bags a ride and that the passenger “made alarming statements and discarded objects from the vehicle, some of which appeared to be human bones.”
Deputies searched the area and recovered human bone fragments. They also searched the man’s home where they discovered more bones and “evidence of 10-20 human skulls.”
While the process of identification remains ongoing, the sheriff’s office suspected the case is “closely tied” to the disappearance of an area woman, Angela McManes.
McManes vanished in 2019 and her last known address was near the man’s home.
“Authorities are working diligently to determine the connection between the remains and McManes, as well as other possible victims.”
The man, who reportedly said he purchased the remains online, is not currently facing charges as the investigation continues.
