One person was killed and another injured Thursday when a helicopter crashed onto a frozen reservoir east of Idaho Falls, authorities said.
The crash occurred in the late afternoon in the area of Ririe Reservoir, the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies responded to the scene using snowmobiles and located two people inside the wrecked aircraft.
One person was declared dead and the other was rushed to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The sheriff’s office closed the area because of a downed power line that was located near the crash site and unstable ice conditions.
“There’s only one spot that a big power line goes across and so whether that’s a factor in it [the crash] or not, we’re still trying to determine,” said Sgt. Bryan Lovell.
The Federal Aviation Association and National Transportation Safety Board had been notified of the crash.
