Delaware police arrest 15-year-old student who brought gun to high school

A Delaware student was arrested Wednesday for allegedly bringing a gun in his backpack to his school.

A Rutherford B. Hayes High School resource officer learned about the student who may have a gun in his backpack at around 11:40 a.m. Wednesday.

The officer and school administrators confronted the student, searched his backpack, and found the gun, Delaware Police Chief Adam Moore said.

The student was arrested and booked into the Central Ohio Youth Center on a charge of illegally bringing a weapon into a school safety zone.

  • “At this time, I do not have information that would lead me to believe there is an ongoing threat to our students or staff,” Moore said.

    In an email to parents, Principal Rex Reeder asked that any safety concerns be quickly reported to the school administration or police.

    “The safety of our students is our number one priority, but it takes all of us to ensure a safe school environment,” Reeder said.

    “We want to reiterate the importance of ‘See something, say something.’”
