Father arrested on suspicion of murder after newborn dies from trauma injuries

A San Diego father was arrested Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of murder in connection to the death of his newborn son.

Deputies and first responders rushed to a home in the 500 block of Sacramento Avenue around 1:20 p.m. over reports of a battery.

Once at the scene, they discovered a newborn boy suffering from traumatic injuries to his head lying unconscious on the living room floor.

  • Paramedics tried life-saving measures but the baby died at the scene. The San Diego Sheriff’s Office confirmed the infant died from blunt force trauma to the head.

    The victim’s 22-year-old father, David Ruiz, was arrested on suspicion of murder.

    “At this stage of the investigation, the motivation and circumstances surrounding this tragic homicide are still unclear,” the office said.
