A ferry dock suddenly collapsed during a fall festival on Georgia’s Sapelo Island Saturday killing seven people and wounding six others.
The tragedy took place at around 4 p.m. as celebrations were organized by the Gullah-Geechee community on the ferry dock of Sapelo Island, about 60 miles south of Savannah.
A gangway suddenly caved in sending at least 20 people to the water. The cause of the collapse remains unclear.
The U.S. Coast Guard and emergency services are still looking for victims with helicopters and boats.
“There was no collision” with a boat or something else, said Natural Resources spokesperson Tyler Jones.
“The thing just collapsed. We don’t know why.”
President Joe Biden expressed his “heartbreak” over the deadly incident.
“Jill and I mourn those who lost their lives, and we pray for the injured and anyone still missing,” he said.
“We are also grateful to the first responders at the scene.”
