Memphis woman fatally shot by ex while walking at cancer event

A Memphis woman was gunned down by her ex-boyfriend while participating in a cancer walk event Saturday afternoon.

Ellie Claire Young, 22, was declared dead at the scene after 26-year-old Jackson Hopper shot her in the head.

Police said the shooting occurred at Shelby Farms Park where a popular breast cancer walk was taking place.

“This young lady, she was still running and a young lady behind her. A white car pulled up and shot her twice,” a witness said.

  • “Everything was still going on down there normally, still carrying on, people still walking,” another described.

    “It sounded like, you know how a car backfires? That’s what it sounded like but come to find out, we got done with it, they said a man shot his wife in the head.”

    Hopper was arrested and a loaded gun was reportedly found in his vehicle.

    “What was in that man’s mind? I don’t know, the devil had him. He’s full of the devil. That devil is working,” another witness said.
