Tennessee boy taken off life-support on Christmas Eve after drowning during school trip

The family of a 15-year-old Tennessee boy is grieving his sudden passing after he died during a school trip to Florida last week.

Jayelin Harper, a Dickson County High School student, was visiting Orlando with the school’s wrestling team when tragedy struck.

The teen was swept by a current while enjoying a trip to Cocoa Beach, his family said.

  • “We were kind of a little dumbfounded by the situation that happened with everything because he’s really not a swimmer at all,” Aunt Keyonda Polen said.

    The freshman was pulled out of the water and taken to the hospital where doctors determined that his brain had stopped functioning.

    Jayelin’s loved ones decided to take him off life support on Christmas Eve.

    “Having Christmas Eve as a day to remember that this family had to make the biggest decision in life, and that was to let him go. It’s very, very hurtful, but we’re getting through it,” Polen added.
