A tragic car crash claimed the lives of three men early Saturday who were apparently racing in Long Island streets before plummeting into a creek.
The victims’ bodies were recovered from the Newtown Creek on Borden Avenue at around 4:45 a.m. after their black sedan drowned. They were rushed to a hospital in critical condition before they all passed away.
“Speed was a factor in the crash,” an NYPD spokesman said. A witness recalled spotting the “souped-up” vehicle “with a modified exhaust speeding down a dead-end street.”
The same witness said that the sedan “dropped gear” making a right turn, but while doing so, it “goes sideways over a hefty makeshift concrete skateboarding ramp” before crashing into the mucky creek.
Such crashes are familiar in the Van Damn Street, which is the last exit before Midtown Tunnel’s tolls that BQE racers try to avoid.
“Firefighters deployed multiple rescue divers in conjunction with Marine units and removed the three doomed passengers from their vehicle,” authorities said.
