Federal officials announced Friday that a 9-year-old Mexican girl had passed away after drowning while crossing the Rio Grande River in March. 20.
Authorities found the girl, her 3-year-old brother, and their mom unresponsive on an island on the Mexico side and started life-saving measures.
The mom and boy were rescued and transported to the shore. “However, despite efforts by the Border Patrol Agents and Eagle Pass Emergency Medical Services, the 9-year-old daughter did not regain consciousness and was later pronounced deceased.”
Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Austin L. Sekro expressed his deepest condolences to the girl’s family and loved ones.
“During these hard times our agents remain resilient and I am extremely proud of their efforts to preserve human life,” Sekro added.
Eagle Pass Border Patrol agents have successfully rescued “over 500 migrants attempting to illegally enter the country” since Oct. 1.
