Two unregistered pit bulls were behind a vicious attack at a New Jersey home where they fatally mauled a 3-year-old boy and injured his mother.
The incident occurred at around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at a Carteret home backyard. A mom and her toddler were playing when the two animals snuck through a fence and launched the attack.
City Mayor Daniel Reiman said that the dogs were not registered with the town and belonged to the victims’ neighbors.
“As a small community, our Carteret family mourns the heart-wrenching loss of our young neighbor. We pray for this young mother and family in this time of unimaginable grief.”
Residents of the area said that the dogs were infamous for attacking people, one of them said.
“Those pit bulls bit people all in this area. I’m aware of certain houses, so I try to walk a different path when I know that they’re on that block.”
