A New York City boy was taken into custody after accidentally shooting a 17-year-old girl killing her last weekend.
The 16-year-old boy “hasn’t stopped crying” since the tragic accident that occurred at his relative’s home in Holliswood at about 5:15 p.m. Saturday.
Deaza Barkley died from a gunshot wound to the head. Prosecutors said the .380 caliber Luger used in the shooting was closely pressed to her head.
“It was an accident; he’s not a bad person. If the family is willing, I’m willing to see them and apologize on my son’s behalf,” the boy’s mother said as she attended his hearing at Queens Criminal Court.
“He hasn’t stopped crying for the last two days over this. It’s devastating.”
The teen was charged with manslaughter and gun possession. Neighbors said they were “absolutely not shocked” that a fatal shooting took place at the Queens home.
“If I say that it’s a multifamily home, I’m giving it dignity. Honestly, it’s almost like a boarding house, almost like a shelter. If a group comes in, another group goes out,” one said.
“If anything was gonna happen on this block, it was gonna happen there. I think more is going on than what just happened,” another added.
