Two backcountry skiers were killed in Oregon and a third died in California by avalanches Monday, authorities said.
The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday that a couple was killed when an avalanche occurred at 6,700 feet on a south-facing slope where they were skiing.
Their bodies were recovered west of Bend in Happy Valley near Broken Top Peak.
“We extend our deepest condolences to all who loved the couple who tragically lost their lives while doing what they loved,” the sheriff’s office said.
“As longtime residents of Central Oregon, they have touched many lives, and their legacy will continue to live on in our community.”
Authorities in El Dorado County, California, said that a backcountry skier went missing Monday evening near Powderhouse Peak before his body was found in an avalanche area near South Kale Tahoe.
