Skier dies while trying ‘high-risk skiing stunt’ on Colorado highway

A young man died Tuesday while trying to perform a “high-risk skiing stunt” on a Colorado highway, authorities said.

The Grand County Communications Center in Colorado received a 911 call reporting a skiing accident on Highway 40, west of Berthoud Pass Summit.

The 21-year-old victim was “unconscious and not breathing” when first responders “arrived on scene and determined that the male subject was deceased.”

  • “The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was attempting to perform a high-risk skiing stunt by trying to clear the width of Highway 40 and unfortunately lacked the necessary speed and distance and subsequently landed on the highway pavement,” officials said.

    “The victim had been wearing a helmet and other protective gear.”

    The incident blocked traffic on Highway 40 in both directions as the scene was being processed.
