A Chicago boy was charged Tuesday in connection to the shooting death of a 12-year-old girl at a Calumet Heights home, police said.
The 14-year-old boy was arrested late Sunday two hours after he accidentally shot and killed Dalilah Batey inside a home in the 9200 block of South Harper Avenue.
The girl’s mother said a group of teens were playing with guns in the home when the 14-year-old boy dropped a gun on a bed causing it to discharge.
Dalilah was struck in the head. The boy allegedly confirmed that the firearm went off when he dropped it on a bed. Police recovered two guns from the home.
The boy was charged with one felony count of involuntary manslaughter and released to his parents on electronic monitoring.
“My best friend and baby never made it home,” the mother said. “My whole heart is gone. She didn’t deserve what happened…Hold you kids tight.”
