A Kentucky man was charged while his son fights for life following a chilling incident that took place late Saturday.
Austin Brooks was allegedly intoxicated while driving his pickup, with his son and nephew in the bed of the truck.
The nephew told detectives Brooks, 40, was speeding to get more beer as he traveled down Porter Road on a wet street.
The boys felt scared as Brooks took them onto the interstate in the area of the Love’s Truck Stop in Scott County.
Police said the boys knocked on the truck cab to get the driver’s attention, but “due to his intoxicated state, they were in fear for their lives.”
The pair jumped from the pickup truck as Brooks kept driving. Brooks' nephew suffered minor injuries, but his son sustained a brain injury.
Authorities said the boy was in a coma at University of Kentucky HealthCare Hospital.
Brooks was charged with wanton endangerment, endangering the welfare of a minor and leaving the scene of an accident.
