Authorities in Houston, Texas were left puzzled after the lifeless bodies of a father and his toddler son were discovered in separate locations hours apart.

The 38-year-old man was fatally shot near a strip mall after 2 p.m. Tuesday. Detectives revealed that there had been “some type of interaction…may have been random or could have known each other.”

Authorities discovered that the victim’s child was also missing before locating him inside his father’s stolen car one mile away at around 6:36 p.m.

  • “Sadly, it was too late. The child had passed in the car. At this time, we don’t know why or how, or what the cause of death will be. It could be something like heat exhaustion,” Houston Executive Assistant Police Chief Larry Satterwhite said. “We just don’t know.”

A person of interest was detained in connection with the incident after authorities released surveillance footage depicting him.

“Pray for this family. A mother lost her husband, and she lost her 2-year-old child today,” Satterwhite said.
