Brooklyn teen, 17, shot dead outside charter school for troubled teenagers

A Brooklyn teen was pronounced dead after being shot in front of a charter school for troubled teenagers Thursday afternoon.

The victim was identified as 17-year-old Devonte Lewis. He died shortly after sustaining gunshot wounds to the stomach and hand at around 2:45 p.m.

First responders rushed Lewis to Kings County Hospital where he passed away, despite initial reports expecting the teen to survive his injuries.

  • The shooting occurred outside the Urban Dove charter school located on East 21st Street in Midwood. The facility serves teens struggling academically.

    Two dark-skinned gunmen were spotted running after shooting the victim as he left Urban Dove but the shooters were not enrolled there, according to the school's executive director Jai Nanda.

    "Urban Dove has never experienced an act of violence such as this. this incident took place in the presence of our school staff and we are grateful no one else was injured."
