Toledo Police said that two toddlers were pronounced dead and a third is critically injured after being shot by mom’s boyfriend inside their apartment late Friday.
It unfolded at a South Toledo apartment complex, located in the 800 block of Byrneport Drive when 27-year-old Kevin Moore started shooting in the air and at the children at around 5 p.m.
Moore is the boyfriend of the children’s mom. A motive for his acts was not determined but authorities cited a domestic dispute.
Neighbors peered from their windows after hearing a man screaming and gunshots being fired.
“We’ve got to get a grasp on this thing,” City Councilman Cerssandra McPherson who attended the crime scene said.
“It is totally out of control. This train is running, just running. How do we derail it? How do we stop it? How do we redirect it?”
“We can’t get to the point of helplessness and hopelessness because they’re our children,” she added. “We as a community have to stand together and fight this.”
Autopsies will be conducted Saturday, the Lucas County Coroner’s Office said.
Police added that the victims’ identities cannot be made public for the moment.
“Please pray for these victims, their families, and the first responders who were there tonight. This was truly a sad day for our community.”
