Eversight news, Ohio news.

A recently revealed study confirmed the presence of the novel coronavirus in the eyeballs of the deceased patients.

Autopsies were conducted at the Center for Vision and Eye Banking Research in Eversight as scientists tried to evaluate the eye tissue gathered from 20 eyes recovered from coronavirus’ victims.

The genome of SARS-CoV-2 was present in the eyes in “small but noteworthy prevalence” including in the posterior and anterior corneal.

Researchers also found evidence of the virus in the conjunctival (the eyelids’ tissue) and the vitreous (the fluid that fills the eye).

Ophthalmology expert Denize Atan said that more researches are necessary before concluding that coronavirus can be spread through the eyes.

“It does highlight the fact that the surface layers of the eye and tears are a possible route for transmission of the virus,” Atan said.

“It is also possible that the virus could be transmitted from some of the tissues inside the eye.”
