Search continues for missing girl who went into East River; never resurfaced

Authorities in New York are actively looking for a 15-year-old girl who went missing after jumping into the waters of the East River Friday afternoon.

The teen went missing at around 12:15 p.m. under the Roosevelt Island Bridge off Rainey Park, between Queens and Randall’s Island.

  • A friend called 911 when the girl did not resurface. Divers combed the area looking for the girl as the efforts slowly turned into a recovery mission.

    Preliminary reports indicated that the girl plunged into the water trying to retrieve her phone before being swept away by strong currents.

    “I’m in shock. This never happens here. Everyone knows the dangers that’s on [the East River], that current. It’s sad,” a bystander said.
