A Washington girl is dead after she accidentally shot herself while filming a social media video on Wednesday evening.
The 14-year-old girl was reportedly handling the firearm at an apartment at around 5:10 p.m. when the gun went off, striking her in the upper body.
Police said lifesaving measures were administered, but the girl died of the injuries. At least one adult was at the home when the tragedy unfolded.
“This is a devastating reminder of the dangers of weapons getting into the hands of young people in our city, and our hearts go out to the family and friends of the decedent,” said Chief of Police Pamela A. Smith.
“Firearms are not toys or props, and they must be properly secured in a place where they can only be accessed by lawful gun owners.”
