A New York woman is dead after she was caught in gunfire while trying to protect her grandson, police said.
Excenia Mette, 61, was shot in the head on 113th Street and Lenox Avenue shortly before 10:30 p.m. Thursday.
The victim was reportedly cooking dinner at her apartment when she heard an argument outside and went to check on her grandson.
The grandson was safe in the apartment and was not involved in the argument that escalated into a shooting.
“This was a grandmother who lost her life, innocent,” said Stephanie McGraw, founder of We All Really Matter.
“She was a woman who didn’t just stand by and see something and not say something. She came down because she was a community leader.”
