4 dead including child in NJ multi-vehicle crash involving special needs school van

Four people were killed Thursday afternoon in a multi-vehicle crash involving a special needs school van, authorities in New Jersey said.

The crash occurred at around 3:20 p.m. on Route 10 in Randolph Township, Morris County prosecutors said.

The deceased were identified as Bertha Castaneda, 67; Maria Figueroa, 58; Diane Goetz, 71; and 4-year-old Yexsel Reyes Granados.

The victims were traveling in a van associated with P.G. Chambers, a Cedar Knolls special education school.

  • The younger boy was initially taken to Morristown Hospital in critical condition, before he succumbed to his injuries Friday afternoon “despite the heroic efforts of the medical team.”

    A second child and two other adults were injured in the crash.

    Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll described the incident as a “horrible tragedy for the Morris County community and beyond.”

    The Morris County Sheriff’s Office CSI Unit and the Randolph Police Department are investigating the crash.
