The parents of an Alabama boy who shot himself with an unsecured gun are facing criminal charges after police made shocking discoveries inside their home.
On April 4, the 4-year-old victim was brought to a hospital with gunshot wounds to his arm and leg.
“The mother was in the hospital with the child yelling at him making statements like ‘see, this is what happens when you play with guns’,” Blount County Sheriff Mark Moon said.
The 39-year-old mother, Cassandra Lynn Lutz, and the 27-year-old father, Alexander Corrie, are now facing a litany of charges, including first-degree assault, animal cruelty, and possession of a prohibited animal.
The animal cruelty charges are related to the discovery of at least 30 snakes, including six dead, and a juvenile crocodile inside the couple’s home.
The snakes were kept in aquariums with the dead ones. The crocodile was found swimming in a tank in the bathroom.
“The mother did make a statement that she was scared to death that the state of Alabama was going to take her kids away from her, and that’s exactly what we did,” Moon said.
“We’re just very thankful he’s alive and will make a full recovery.”
