A Florida man was fatally shot by a Polk County Sheriff’s deputy after he reportedly brandished a knife and refused to surrender.

Sheriff Grady Judd said his deputies responded Friday afternoon to the call of a homeowner reporting a man who broke into his residence and said he wanted to be shot and killed.

The homeowner told the man to leave, and he did before breaking into another woman’s home and making similar statements.

“He went into the kitchen and went into our fridge,” a resident recalled. “He was all sweaty because he was jumping on the trampoline.”

The sheriff said that while the man did not harm the residents, he armed himself with a knife when deputies arrived and was trying to approach them.

“This man is dangerous. He presented himself as dangerous, and he asked to be shot. He demanded to be shot, and then he asked us to shoot him, so we obliged him,” Judd said.

“He asked for it, and he got it. Our deputies were in a position of grave danger and risk, and they protected themselves.”
