Two people are dead and one injured in targeted shootings carried out by a Walmart employee who is currently in the custody of Newton County, Georgia, police.
Deputies responded to reports of a shooting at the Walmart at around 1:30 a.m. and learned that an employee had retrieved a gun from outside the store and shot two acquaintances, killing one.
The gunman then left the store and went to a nearby home, where he shot and killed another acquaintance. The surviving victim was listed in critical condition.
“This was an active shooter situation. The suspect specifically targeted individuals they knew,” police said.
The suspect was reportedly arrested in North Carolina. Identities were not immediately disclosed.
A Walmart spokesperson said the company was “heartbroken by what’s happened.”
“There’s no place for violence in our stores,” said Walmart’s global press office director Joe Pennington.
“We’re focused on taking care of our associates and supporting law enforcement with their investigation.”
