One man was killed and five others were hurt in a shooting outside a non-profit organization in Memphis, police said Wednesday.
Gunfire erupted just before 3:30 p.m. in the 4000 block of South Mendenhall outside the Memphis Allies site.
Five male victims were transported to area hospitals, including one in critical condition.
22-year-old Matthew Williams was killed in the shooting. His mother said he attended an event at the non-profit because he wanted to change his life.
“We are heartbroken over the senseless act of violence on Wednesday that claimed the life of a Memphis Allies program participant at one of our sites,” the organization said.
“While we are devastated by Wednesday’s events, it will not shake our resolve to continue working with community leaders and partner organizations to reduce gun violence and make Memphis safer.”
