Driver killed after car plunges from blocked off interstate in Topeka

A driver is dead after their car plunged from a blocked-off area of Interstate 70’s Polk-Quincy Viaduct in Topeka, officials said.

“On April 5, 2025, at approximately 1:29 a.m., emergency responders received information about a vehicle that had driven off the I-70 overpass near 2nd and S. Kansas Ave.,” Topeka Police Lt. Ron Ekis said.

“The motorist was driving on a portion of the interstate that was blocked off and under construction.”

  • Ekis did not provide information on the victim’s name, gender, or age but said the person died at the scene.

    “No other vehicles were involved, and the driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle.”

    The Kansas Department of Transportation recently started a three-year project to replace and realign the aging viaduct running between S.W. Polk and S.E. Quincy streets.
