A Virginia woman is behind bars in connection to the death of her autistic 23-year-old niece.
49-year-old Tina T. Curtis was the primary caretaker of her 23-year-old niece, Secrett Curtis, who was autistic and had cerebral palsy.
The two women lived together before Curtis died, weighing 76 pounds at Chippenham Hospital in Chesterfield on Monday.
Investigators said the victim was kept in a mold-infested, locked room in the basement. Her bedding was covered in blood, feces, and other bodily fluids.
Tina Curtis reportedly asked her son to put Secrett in a warm bathtub in an attempt to revive her before he alerted police.
The suspect was arrested Tuesday on charges including abuse and neglect of a vulnerable adult leading to death.
