A man is dead and several others were injured Tuesday morning after trying a water rescue of a vehicle that went into a Columbus pond.
Officers and first responders rushed to the area of N. Indianapolis Road and Kenholt Drive at around 11:31 a.m. after a car plunged into a pond.
Several bystanders went into the water trying to help the car’s occupant as the vehicle kept sinking.
The 46-year-old man, later identified as Christopher Pool, was pulled from the vehicle with the help of the Columbus Fire Department and the Bartholomew County Water Rescue Team.
Life-saving measures were administered at the scene but the man was ultimately pronounced dead.
Investigators said Pool was traveling southbound on Indianapolis Road when his car went off the roadway into bushes before landing in the pond.
Multiple people suffered minor injuries while trying to rescue the victim. They were treated at the scene and released, authorities said.
