A North Carolina man died Sunday after falling through an icy pond while looking for his missing dog, police said.
Rockingham County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the home of 34-year-old Phillip Daniel Skelley who had vanished after leaving to search for his dog.

A K9 unit tracked Shelley to an icy pond near his home. In the ice, deputies could observe two holes.
With the assistance of divers and firefighters, Skelley’s body was found in the pond and pulled out of the water.
Detectives believe the victim was trying to save his dog when they both fell into the pond. The deaths were deemed accidental.
