A Houston man was fatally shot by police Thursday after he charged at officers with a knife.
Officers responded to reports of a suicide-in-progress at an apartment complex on the Sam Houston Tollway south of Beechnut and were told that a man was cutting himself inside an apartment.
Assistant Chief James Skelton said the man was armed with a knife when he charged at the officers.
One of the officers fired at the suspect, killing him.
“This call today was a call where they were trying to aid someone who was actively in crisis, and unfortunately, it escalated so quick they were not able to even talk to him,” Skelton said.
The officer who fired at the suspect has been with the department for a year and a half.
