An Ohio man was arrested Saturday after he allegedly forced a 12-year-old boy to sit in ice baths for extended amounts of time, leading to the boy’s death.
Anthony J. McCants, 23, was reportedly responsible for the care of Jadako Taylor on Saturday when he called 911 seeking help.
“Uh, my little brother…bust his head,” he reportedly told the dispatcher, adding that the boy was still breathing.
But when first responders arrived at the Akron home, Jadako was not breathing and was unconscious. He died about an hour later at a hospital.
Investigators said that McCants, a family acquaintance, forced Jadako to sit in two ice baths for 45 minutes as a form of punishment.
He then made the victim do pushups and another exercise between the four baths. The boy eventually started vomiting and seizing.
“When body temperatures drops, the heart, nervous system and other organs can’t work as well as they usually do,” the Mayo Clinic says.
“Left untreated, hypothermia can cause the heart and respiratory system to fail and eventually can lead to death”.
