Father dies after carrying teen son to safety through Oklahoma wildfire
An Oklahoma father is hailed a hero after he died saving his teen son’s life from a wildfire that ravaged the Chandler area on Friday.
Allen Ferguson carried his 15-year-old son Will Conley and brought him to a road where rescuers could find them, sustained fatal burns in the process.
Even as the pair were being transported to the hospital, the dying man kept talking to the teen to keep him calm.
The wrestling coach and father-of-four succumbed to his injuries Saturday while his son remains in critical condition and had a “long road to recovery.”
“Whether it be fishing, metal detecting, sports, making art out of anything, civil war reenactment and many other things, if his family was interested in it, he would find a way to learn and make it happen,” family friend Shane Earp said.
“Always had jokes and funny comments so you must be ready to laugh when around him.”
Local state representative Jim Shaw said Ferguson “died a hero, and his dedication to his family and our community will never be forgotten.”
