Authorities in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, arrested a former student in connection to the death of a Southern University student late last month.
Caleb McCray, 23, a Southern University graduate and member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity was charged with criminal hazing and manslaughter over the Feb. 27 death of Caleb Wilson.
Wilson, 20, was a junior at the university participating in an off-campus, unsanctioned fraternity ritual when he died.
Police said the victim was punched in the chest at a warehouse while pledging. He collapsed and was rushed to a hospital where he died.
Investigators said those who witnessed the incident failed to call 911 for help or get an ambulance for the unresponsive man.
Two other people were arrested on misdemeanor hazing charges in the case. Their names were not made public.
“The charges brought against Mr. Caleb McCray are serious, and we acknowledge the gravity of this matter. However, it is essential to remember that an accusation is not proof of guilt,” said McCray’s attorney Dr. Phillip M. Robinson.
“I maintain my client’s innocence and urge the public to withhold rushing to judgment until all the evidence is heard.”
