Multiple backcountry skiers are trapped after being swept in an avalanche near Anchorage, state troopers said Wednesday.
The avalanche occurred late Tuesday afternoon near the skiing area of Girdwood, south of Anchorage.
The number of those trapped and their immediate conditions are unclear.
“Troopers received a report of an avalanche that caught multiple individuals who were heliskiing yesterday afternoon near the west fork of 20 Mile River,” said spokesperson Austin McDaniel.
“The company that they were skiing with attempted to recover the skiers but were unable to due to the depth of the snow.”
Rescuers and troopers are set to reach the site off Seward Highway through aircraft later today.
