Brooklyn mother charged in death of 6-year-old daughter found in bathtub

The mother of the 6-year-old Brooklyn girl who was found dead in a bathtub Friday was charged in connection to the incident, authorities said Sunday.

Karla Espinal, 26, has been charged with felony assault, child endangerment, and reckless endangerment. Upgraded charges are pending autopsy results.

Police responded and found the girl dead in a bathtub in the home in East New York at around 1:30 p.m.

  • Investigators said the girl had been in the water for around 20 minutes before cops arrived at the scene.

    The victim had blood clots in her eyes indicating a struggle. Her father accompanied his deceased daughter in an ambulance while the mother was brought out in handcuffs.

    Neighbors were in disbelief and devastation over the little girl’s death; they said Espinal and the father seemed to love their child and would take her to school.

    “Sometimes it doesn’t seem the way it is, but it is what it is,” the girl’s uncle said. “I don’t want to talk about anything.”
